Natural Lip Balm

Lip balms work hard. They soothe dry, chapped lips and keep the delicate skin around your lips looking beautiful. When it comes to choosing a lip balm, though, you've got lots of choices. So why opt for a natural lip balm? The answer is simple: natural lip balm protects your lips from chapping, dryness, and irritation while also protecting you from harsh ingredients like pesticides, chemicals, additives, and synthetic fragrances. It's lip care - only smarter!

What is "Natural Lip Balm?"

What is the difference between ChapStick and lip balm?

Petrolatum is a naturally-derived ingredient, so is ChapStick "natural lip balm?" No, not truly. Traditional lip balms contain various synthetic ingredients to stabilize formulas, provide coloring, or add a fragrance. While some of these ingredients may be "natural," they may still expose you to harsh chemicals and contaminants.

Truly natural lip balms, meanwhile, contain whole ingredients, such as beeswax, cocoa butter, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C. These natural ingredients provide protective benefits without exposing you and the delicate skin of your lips to harsh additives and ingredients.

Why Use Natural Lip Balm? 3 Big Benefits

Lip balm soothes dry, chapped lips while also protecting the skin around the mouth from harsh weather and environmental irritants. When it's time to pamper your pout, why pick up a natural lip balm? Here are a few significant benefits:

1. Natural Lip Balm is Cruelty-Free

Most, though notall, natural lip balm is cruelty-free. Cruelty-free cosmetics are not tested on animals. By setting an example in the industry, these brands prove that animal testing is unnecessary and encourage other brands to follow suit.

2. Natural Lip Balm is Environmentally-Friendly

Non-organic lip balms often contain ingredients that are harmful to the environment. Lip balms that contain petroleum-based products, like ChapStick, are a great example.

These petroleum products are manufactured via oil drilling and damage the natural environment. Meanwhile, when you choose to use natural lip balm, you're opting for formulas that have far less impact on the natural landscape, including soil, water, and air quality.

3. Natural Lip Balm Contains Nurturing Ingredients

The skin around your lips is delicate. It's some of thethinnest skin on the body. Lips also don't have any sebaceous glands - the glands that secrete oils and keep skin moisturized - which means they're at the mercy of the elements and are particularly vulnerable to heat and cold.

The only natural source of moisture your lips receive comes via your saliva, which puts them at risk of becoming dry and chapped. Fortunately, natural lip balm contains various nurturing ingredients that help keep this delicate skin healthy and happy.

Conditioning ingredients like antioxidants and vitamins, for example, make your lips feel softer and look smoother. They go deeper than that, though: they also improve your lips' health by providing lasting nourishment. Ingredients like beeswax create a barrier that helps repair damage from sun exposure and environmental irritation.Beeswax is also antibacterial, which means it can help prevent the growth of infection-causing bacteria.

What Ingredients Make a Lip Balm Good?

You've decided to use natural lip balm. Great! Now it's time to find one with a formula that works for you. Here are a few ingredients we recommend trying:

  • Beeswax.Beeswax is the ultimate ingredient in natural lip balm. In addition to healing and softening skin, beeswax has antibacterial properties that can help you fight dry skin, irritation, rashes, etc. Fortunately, all of our natural lip balms are crafted with beeswax as a base.
  • Honey.Honey is an all-natural wonder ingredient with many benefits for the skin. In addition to being full of antioxidants, honey helps soften and protect skin and banish harmful bacteria.
  • Peppermint. According to theNational Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, peppermint oil (applied topically - as in a natural lip balm) can help relieve pain, soothe irritation, and invigorate the skin. Look for anatural lip balm with a pop of peppermint for a refreshing experience.
  • Lavender. Lavender is known around the globe for its soothing, relaxing properties. We love lavender lip balm for its gentle hydration and soft fragrance. Ourlavender lip balm contains a bit of lemon oil for brightness and an irresistible smell. This is one of our top-selling lip balms for a reason.
  • Coconut. You love coconut body and hair products, which leave a pleasant smell behind. So why not trycoconut lip balm? This delicious lip balm will transport you directly to the Caribbean by hydrating, nourishing, and delightfully summarizing.

While these ingredients are some of our favorites, there are many others to try. Look for ingredients like orange, ginger, mint, and more. If you're unsure what you like in a natural lip balm, experiment with a few different ingredients. Eventually, you'll find a formula that features a smell and moisturizing profile you love!

What Ingredients are harmful in lip Balm?

Now that you know which ingredients to seek out, let's talk about a few to avoid. Here's our top list of things to steer clear of:

  • Camphor, phenol, or alcohol. These ingredients make lips feel tingly but can irritate sensitive skin.
  • Synthetic fragrances and parabens. Simple is best when it comes to lip balms. If you want something that smells good, opt for a lip balm scented with natural oils. Additionally, avoid parabens, such as methylparaben and butylparaben, which can negatively impact your health.
  • Phthalates. Another popular beauty additive, phthalates, makes plastics more flexible and resilient. Unfortunately, they're also commonly used as dissolving agents and don't want things in your skincare products.
  • Petrolatum. Added to lip balms to help lock in moisture, this petroleum-derivative is tough on the environment and can irritate sensitive skin.
  • BHA. BHA, or butylated hydroxyanisole, is a preservative used in many mainstream cosmetics. However, studies have shown ithas carcinogenic effects, which are too risky to use on thin lip skin.

In addition to the ingredients above, avoid any ingredients that irritate your unique skin. For example, tea tree oil works well for some people and irritates others. While the ingredients above are all harsh and artificial, everybody is different, and even something as natural and gentle as essential oils may not work for certain consumers. If you have sensitive skin, look foran additive-free, unscented beeswax lip balm formula.
