Spring Clean Your House Using Chemical-Free and EcoFriendly
Methods Baking soda and vinegar are great for cleaning, sanitizing, and deodorizing. They can be used individually or can be combined together with other ingredients to make an all-purpose cleaner, a glass cleaner, and cleaners for specific cleaning spots, such as removing mildew or grease. Chemical-free and eco-friendly cleaning products are also available for purchase commercially. In addition to your green cleaning products, be sure to stock up on sponges, cloths, scrub brushes, and rubber gloves to successfully accomplish your spring home maintenance.

Throughout Each Room

Windows, blinds, curtains, carpets, and rugs – they’re probably in most rooms of your home, and cleaning them is usually reserved for spring cleaning. Rubber-edged Squeegees are great for cleaning windows, offering a quicker and more effective solution than cloth or newspaper. They’re also more eco-friendly, as they can be reused. First, fill a bucket with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap and wet a sponge. Wipe the windows, rubbing dirt away. Next, use the squeegee to wipe away the water. Finish by drying the windowsills with a dry cloth. Your blinds collect a lot of dust and are often neglected when you clean. That’s what spring cleaning is for! If your blinds are made from wood, use a few drops of gentle wood cleaner on a nearly dry sponge. If you have aluminum blinds, wash them outdoors using water and a noncorrosive cleaner. Be sure to wipe the blinds thoroughly with a towel to prevent rust. Have you ever cleaned your curtains? They are notorious for collecting pet hair and dust. While you can vacuum and steam-clean some curtains, others need to be dry-cleaned, so be sure to check their labels. Light bulbs also collect a lot of dust, but most people don’t think to clean them. Unscrew light bulbs (allow them to cool if they’re warm) and polish the bulbs with a microfiber cloth dampened with water. Be sure to avoid wetting the metal screw base. For bulbs in recessed ceiling fixtures, use a telescoping duster. Carpets and rugs take a beating and can really benefit from a good cleaning. Many retail stores allow you to rent a shampooer, and some brands have a green cleaning solution. Please note that you should contact a professional for wool carpeting or material that is valuable or delicate.

Appliances and More

Your devices are designed to clean other items, but did you know the appliance itself needs to be cleaned and tuned up periodically? To clean out any food particles and leave it smelling fresh, clean your dishwasher by running a cycle with one cup of vinegar in a dishwasher-safe bowl on the top rack. Once it’s complete, sprinkle a little bit of baking soda on the bottom of the washer and run it again. You probably wipe out the fridge frequently, but it really needs a deep clean every few months using a solution of two tablespoons of baking soda for every quart of warm water. Remove shelves and drawers and wash them in the solution. Before placing them back in the fridge, clean the walls of the refrigerator with the solution as well. To get into nooks and crannies, use a toothbrush. Keep your fridge fresher between deep cleans by wiping up spills immediately and going through food once a week. Don’t forget to clean the refrigerator coils every six months to keep the system from overheating and to keep the appliance running smoothly. This is accomplished using a vacuum or dusting brush. Lastly, remember to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors every six months. This isn’t really a cleaning tip, but it’s definitely a spring home maintenance advice and is necessary for safety. Decluttering your home and cleaning items and areas that are usually overlooked can help ease allergy symptoms and kill hidden germs. Your home will also look better, which makes you feel better too.
