For us, the answer goes back to where everything started, with a beehive.
Beessential grew from David's unexpected introduction to beekeeping into a family business making skin, body, and hair care products here in Ohio. Bees are still an important part of our story, but so are the choices we've made along the way: making our products in small batches, choosing ingredients for a reason, and keeping skincare as straightforward as we can.
Here are 10 things we'd like you to know about Beessential.
David didn't set out to become a beekeeper.
A coworker asked if he could put a beehive on our family property. When circumstances changed, David ended up taking care of the hive himself.
He was hooked.
The more he learned about bees, the more interested he became in honey, beeswax, propolis, and everything happening inside a healthy hive.
Eventually, that curiosity moved beyond beekeeping. David began experimenting with ways to use ingredients from the hive alongside botanical oils and other ingredients in personal care products.
That's where Beessential began.
Beessential has grown quite a bit since those first days with the bees, but we're still a family owned Ohio business.
Our family has been involved in Beessential from the beginning—from making products and filling orders to running the business and talking with customers.
We're proud of that.
When you order from Beessential, you're buying from a small business with real people behind it. These are products we know, use, and share with our own families.
Beessential products are made in our Northeast Ohio facility.
We make our skincare and personal care products in small batches rather than simply putting our name on products made somewhere else.
Staying close to production has always been important to us. It means we're involved in the process and know what goes into the products with our Beessential name.
You'll see ingredients such as honey, beeswax, aloe, olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, sunflower oil, shea butter, botanical extracts, and essential oils throughout our products.
They're not there because they're trendy.
Each formula is different, and we choose ingredients based on what we're trying to accomplish with that particular product.
For example, beeswax is especially useful in products such as lip balm because it helps form a protective layer that can reduce moisture loss. Plant oils and butters help soften and condition dry feeling skin, while ingredients such as aloe can provide additional hydration.
We also think you should be able to see exactly what's in the product you're buying. That's why we encourage customers to read the full ingredient list on each product page, especially if you have an allergy or sensitivity.
Honey and beeswax have a special place at Beessential because they're connected to how our company began.
We didn't add a bee to our packaging and then go looking for a bee story.
The bees came first.
Beekeeping gave David a firsthand appreciation for the hive, and ingredients such as honey and beeswax eventually became part of many of the products we make today.
Our Honey Beeswax Lip Balm is probably one of the simplest examples. Beeswax helps give the balm its structure while creating a protective layer on the lips, and honey is part of the formula that has made this little tube a longtime Beessential favorite.

Most of us aren't looking for a 12 step routine.
We want products that work well, feel good to use, and fit into everyday life.
A hand cream should help dry hands feel softer.
A lip balm should protect and comfort dry lips.
A body wash should leave you feeling clean without making your skin feel unnecessarily stripped.
And shampoo should clean your hair without turning washing your hair into a science project.
That's the kind of everyday personal care we try to make at Beessential.
We're often asked about ingredients we don't use.
Beessential products are formulated without parabens and without Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES).
That doesn't mean we believe every ingredient described as "natural" is automatically good or that every synthetic ingredient is automatically bad.
It's more practical than that.
We make ingredient choices based on the type of products we want Beessential to offer.
And because every person's skin is different, we always recommend checking the ingredient list for the specific product you're considering, particularly if you have known allergies or sensitivities.
Beessential does not test its finished products on animals.
Our connection to beekeeping has also made us very aware of how connected bees are to everything around them.
Spend enough time around a hive, and you start paying attention to what's blooming, what's growing nearby, the weather, water sources, and the other pollinators sharing the environment.
It's difficult to care about bees without caring about the world they live in.
We're careful about making sweeping sustainability claims because no business is perfect.
We're not either.
What we can do is continue looking for practical ways to reduce waste and make better choices as we grow.
One example is the packing material we use when shipping orders. Beessential uses biodegradable packing peanuts made from organic starch, and we use recyclable materials where possible.
These may seem like small decisions, but they add up over thousands of orders.
We see sustainability as something to keep improving rather than something a company can simply declare finished.
