Honoring Queen Bees on International Women's Day

March 12, 2025 2 min read

March 8 is International Women's Day, and we want to recognize and celebrate the queen bees' incredible role in our ecosystem. Among the many bees in a hive, the queen bee stands out as the heart and soul of the colony, playing a vital role in maintaining the health and productivity of the hive. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the queen bee and her important contributions to the hive's survival and the broader environment.

The Queen Bee: The Heart of the Hive

Did you know that more than 90% of the honey bees in a hive are female? These hardworking ladies do all the labor—from raising new bees and tending to the queen to foraging and producing the honey we love. The bees' dedication and teamwork are vital to the hive's survival and the health of our environment.

The queen bee is the sole fertile female in the hive, and her primary job is to lay eggs, ensuring the colony's survival. While worker bees (which are also female) do most of the labor—such as foraging for nectar, producing honey, and caring for the brood—the queen’s reproductive role is crucial to the hive’s growth and longevity. Depending on the colony's needs, she can lay up to 2,000 eggs daily, and her offspring will eventually become the new workers, drones, or queens.

Why Bees Matter

Bees, particularly honey bees, are essential pollinators that support biodiversity and global food security. Honey bees pollinate over 90 crops, including fruits, vegetables, and nuts, that make up a significant portion of the food we eat every day. Without bees, many of these crops would not thrive, and our food systems would be at risk.

In addition to pollinating food crops, bees contribute to the health of wild plants and flowers, supporting other wildlife species. Bees are critical in maintaining ecosystems' biodiversity and keeping our planet healthy.

At Beessential, we’re proud to support the queen bee and advocate for pollinator protection. We use sustainably sourced honey in our products, ensuring that bees continue to play an essential role in our world for generations to come.

Let’s raise a glass to the queens of the hive and all the amazing women who make a difference every day! Cheers to celebrating power, purpose, and nature.
